Interview Tips

Interview TipsIf you are in the process of searching for a job, you may be faced with attending some interviews very soon. It’s natural to be a little nervous about the possibility of interviewing with new companies; however this can be a great time to put your best foot forward and let your talents shine in an interview. Here are some helpful interview tips to consider while going through this process.

Research the company.

Before the interview, prepare ahead of time by doing some research about the company. Many reputable companies have websites available where you can start learning more about how business is done, read their mission statement and review the profiles of their executive leadership. If you are unsure, seek more information from the hiring department and obtain a more detailed job description and requirements of the job itself. Try to put yourself into the shoes of the person who will be interviewing you and think about what qualities you can emphasize and bring to the table as a new hire. Remember, one of the most common interview questions is how well you know the company and how you can benefit the company – so be prepared.

Brush up on your interviewing skills.

The most nerve wracking part of the interviewing process is walking into a hiring manager’s office and having to answer questions about your personal and professional life. A helpful way to improve your performance is to practice what you are planning to talk about ahead of time. You can look up many of the most common interview questions and prepare answers that will help you make a favorable impression. Then practice answering these questions in front of a mirror or ask a friend to stand in as the interviewer. Over time, you will overcome any nervousness you feel and be ready on the day of your big interview.

Maintain confidence and a positive attitude while interviewing.

Making the best impression when interviewing is not all about appearances and degrees. You will have the best success if you walk in with an air of confidence in yourself and answer all interview questions with a positive response. That means, use positive words to describe any and all work experience you have had, customers you have encountered as well as other employees or companies you’ve had the pleasure of associating with. Remember to smile and answer questions clearly and directly. Make sure to make plenty of eye contact with the person interviewing you as this conveys sincerity and an ability to build rapport with others.

Follow up is just as important as the actual interview.

Many job seekers do not realize that the interview process is not just about applying for a job, sending over a resume, getting an interview then showing up. While you are in the interviewing room, be sure to take note of anything special about the person that’s interviewing you, most especially the person’s name and position within the company. Then once the interview concludes, be sure to follow up in the form of a written thank you note addressed to that person. Thank this person for taking the time to explain more about the company, the job opportunity and the company mission. Let the hiring manager known you are excited about the possibility of joining their dynamic team.

As you search for work, remember that a positive attitude and professionalism can go a long way at aiding you with landing the perfect job.
